Georgia Credit Union Hike At Home Program

Hike at HomeIt is vital to any industry to communicate with legislators on what is important to that industry. Legislators need to hear from credit unions so they are informed and willing to support and protect this industry and the members we serve. Credit unions advocates can do so in a variety of ways: collectively through calls to action on pending legislation or regulations, Hike the Hill visits to Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, GA as well as building relationships with legislators back home in their respective districts. Beginning in 2009 credit union advocates have had the opportunity to build such relationships with key legislative leaders in the districts through regional “Hike At Home” meetings – a low time commitment, low cost, but high impact activity all credit unions.

These targeted meetings with key state and federal legislators provide a local avenue opportunity to discuss the issues that are important to the credit union movement, thereby further enhancing the credit union industry. There is no better time than now for credit union leaders to share their story and express their viewpoints with their elected officials, and for the time commitment of only a few short hours, credit union advocates can build a significant relationship with their local legislator that will benefit all credit unions for years to come.

Hike at Homes are planned around the legislators’ schedule – typically outside of the state legislative session or during the Congressional recesses, and are often on short notice – so be on the lookout for one coming to your area. Whether structured around a small meeting at the district office, or inviting the legislator to address a credit union chapter meeting, these meetings have and will continue to provide a perfect avenue for credit union political involvement.
